PodCast EconomistAs: Professor Deirdre N. McCloskey talks about freedom, vaccination and LGBT rights

Economist Deirdre N. McCloskey is our guest on the new episode of the EconomistAs podcast. She is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and graduated from Harvard. She has published more than 400 articles and edited 25 books.

Prof. McCloskey and Laura Karpuska talk about freedom, vaccination, and LGBT rights. McCloskey says that as a teenager, she was a socialist. This motivated her to pursue an economist career, as her central motivation was to help the poor population.

Gradually, she migrated to be a liberal, in the European sense of the term. According to her, the word “liberal” has different meanings that vary according to the place where it is being used.

Liberalism is not just about non-intervention by the State in the Economy, but also in people’s private lives. In addition, Prof. McCloskey discusses how the right of permission is essential for developing a country and the enrichment of people.

McCloskey points out that vaccination in the United States should occur on the market, with the government making vouchers available to the poor.

Recalling her trajectory, the economist comments that her gender transition was shocking for some people. She felt like a woman was treated from the moment men ignored her statements. Listen to the full episode here: https://t.co/u5N9044qv7?amp=1
